Day five preliminary rounds of 2011 Australian Age Championships: Girls events
Day five of the 2011 Australian Age Championships displayed the strong performances of the national age group swimmers in Adelaide on April 22, 2011. The Adelaide championship will continue for one more day and help identify potential swimmers from Australia.
The session included the preliminary rounds of the 200m back-stroke, 400m freestyle, 100m back-stroke, 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly and the 50m freestyle in different age-brackets.
The session started with the 17-18yrs 200m back-stroke, where Jordan White of Cranbrook occupied the fastest qualification spot in a time of 2:16.25 minutes. Aisling Scott of Brothers followed her on the final list as the second fastest swimmer, clocking
2:18.69 minutes. The third spot was secured by Norwood’s Whitney Ireland, who touched the wall in 2:18.69 minutes.
Later, 13-year-old Amy Forrester of Clayfield Aquatics, cruised her way into the final of the 400m freestyle, touching the wall first in 4:26.68 minutes. River City Rapid’s Taylor Green and Australian Crawl’s Zannetta Lovi followed her in the finals, touching
the wall second and third in 4:27.93 and 4:30.96 minutes.
In the meantime, Rebecca Booth of Abbotsleigh smashed the top qualification spot of the 100m back-stroke in the 14-year-old’s category. She touched the wall first in 1:05.01 minutes and was engaged in a neck-to-neck battle with her closest rivals, Lauren
Rettie and Naomi Smit. Rettie was only 0.18 seconds behind Booth and touched the wall for second in 1:05.19 minutes and was 0.18 seconds ahead of Smit, who touched the wall in 1:05.37 minutes.
Next were the 15-year-olds in the 200m freestyle, where Leah Neale demonstrated her unique swimming skills by touching the wall first in 2:05.47 minutes. Her time was only 0.10 seconds her closest rival, Ebo Blackstone, who touched the wall second in 2:05.57
seconds. Carla Buchanan secured the third fastest spot in a time of 2:05.74 minutes.
After a few minutes, Chandler’s Mikka Sheridan transpired as the fastest swimmer in the 16-year-olds 100m butterfly. Sheridan clocked an astounding time of 1:01.60 minutes which was 0.03 seconds under last year’s champion Melanie Bath. Samantha Wilkins and
Emma Niere followed her on the finishing wall, touching the wall second and third in 1:03.01 and 1:03.11 minutes. Whereas, Niere remained only 0.01 seconds faster than Britta Elmslie, who appeared fourth in 1:03.12 minutes.
Then, 13-year-old S Haughey of HKG conquered the fastest qualification spot in the 50m freestyle by touching the wall in 26.58 seconds. She was followed by Jemma Schlicht and Hazel, who touched the wall for the second and third spot in 26.86 and 26.96 seconds.
The Adelaide crowd enjoyed the ferocious swim by all the swimmers and expect more from them in the finals of their respective events.
