Day four evening session: 2011 Irish Long Course National Championships - Men’s events
2011 Irish Long Course Championships concluded on May 1, 2011 after conducting Men’s events in its final session at the National Aquatic Centre.
The session witnessed remarkable efforts of the Philip Duffy, Karl Burdis, Niall Wynn, Botond Solymossy and the Nicholas Quinn that placed them on the top of podium in their respective events.
The session started with the finals of 100m butterfly, where the arena’s favourite, Philip Duffy sustained his fastest spot to earn the gold medal in a time of 55.95 seconds. ALS’s Andrew Meegan and TROJ’s Eoin Gray followed him on the podium for the silver
and bronze medal, clocking a time of 58.42 and 58.67 seconds, respectively.
Then, PORT’s Karl Burdis displayed a phenomenal swim in the 200m back-stroke, clocking a time of 2:04.57 minutes for the gold medal. ST P’s Niall Wynn and NRS’s Luke Fitzgibbon earned the silver and bronze medals behind Burdis, clocking 2:07.93 and 2:09.42
minutes, respectively.
Moments later, Niall Wynn of STP cruised his way into the finals, earning the gold medal in 2:06.57 minutes. His astound timing placed him almost a second away from his following swimmer, DOL’s John P Quinn, who occupied the silver medal in a time of 2:07.74
minutes. KILK-IRL’s Colm Dowling, who qualified as the second fastest swimmer into the finals, failed to maintain his position and touched the wall third in 2:09.66 minutes.
After few minutes, Botonde Solymossy dominated the 50m freestyle semi-finals. Solymossy qualified as the fastest swimmer into the finals, clocking a time of 24.27 seconds. His time was 0.39 seconds faster than his closest rival, COR’s Matthew Coward, who
qualified as the second fastest in 24.56 seconds. The third fastest qualification spot was secured by NY&MN’s Brian O’ Sullivan, who posted a time of 24.62 seconds.
Last event of the session was 200m breast-stroke final, where the CBAR’s 17-year-old Nicholas Quinn demonstrated his aggressive swimming to the arena. Quinn earned the title from his closest competitor, LARNE’s Ryan Wray, with a difference of almost 10 seconds.
Quinn posted a time of 2:20.65 minutes for the gold medal while Wray earned the silver medal in 2:30.30 minutes. They were followed by DOL’s John P Quinn, who followed them on the podium for the bronze medal in a time of 2:33.58 minutes.
The championship concluded after its last event whereas the Irish swimmers earned crowd’s applaud after their astonishing swims in the finals of their respective events.
