Day four finals of the 2011 Telkom South Africa National Championship - Youth Events
Fourth day of 2011 Telkom South Africa National Championship has concluded at the Newton Park Pool. The championship provides a chance to national youth, who wants to qualify for the South African Swimming team to compete at the 2011 World Championships
in Shanghai, this July.
Winners clocking a time under the FINA A-Time Qualification Standard will be confirmed with their places in the team for the World Championships, while the swimmers clocking a time under FINA B-Time Qualification criteria will be finalised after the conclusion
of the championship.
Day four concluded with the finals of the 50m breast-stroke, 50m backstroke, 100m breast-stroke, 100m backstroke, 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly of those Men and Women, who fall under the Youth Category.
The session started with the Men’s 50m breast-stroke, where ZIM-ZZ’s James Lawson posted a gold finish, clocking a time of 30.38 seconds. He was just 0.05 seconds ahead of his following Christopher Brill of CGA-CG, who touched the wall for second spot in
a time of 30.43 seconds. Christopher Ryan managed to out-touch his nearest swimmer Calvin Price and clocked 30.44 seconds for the bronze medal.
In the Women’s 50m back-stroke, EP-EP’s Erin Graham flaunted a miraculous swim of 31.15 seconds to reach to the top of the podium. She was followed by CGA-CG’s Brittany Reeves and NTS-NT’s Rita Naude, who climbed the podium for the silver and bronze medal
in a time of 31.38 and 31.46 seconds, respectively.
After a while, 15-year-old Nikki Kirkby staggered the arena with her amazing swim of 1:14.56 minutes in the Women’s 100m breast-stroke that placed her on the top of the podium. With her magnificent swimming capabilities, she out-touched Jessica Liss, who
touched the wall for silver medal in a time of 1:14.69 minutes. Michael Wessels followed her on the finishing wall, clocking a stupendous 1:14.85 minutes.
Next was the Men’s 100m back-stroke final, where WPA-WP’s Zaahir Gamiet earned the gold medal by submitting a 58.37 seconds swim. He earned his way to the top of podium ahead of EP-EP’s Adam Stevenson and Fsa-Fs’s Reyn Pretorius, who reported second and
third finishes in 59.40 and 59.97 seconds, respectively.
In the Women’s 50m freestyle final, Kayla Ferreira of NTS-NT posted a 27.39 seconds effort ahead of the CGA-CG’s Robyn Sher and EP-EP’s Michael Barnes, who proved their eligibility for the silver medal by touching the wall in a 27.48 seconds simultaneous
effort.
Last event of the session was the Men’s 100m butterfly final, where Reynard Wessels of Fsa-Fs displayed an astounding swim of 55.57 seconds. Jonathan VD Merwe and Gideon Du Toit followed him on the podium for the silver and bronze medal in 55.85 and 56.56
seconds, respectively.
The session concluded without the selection of any youth swimmer into the South African team, as no swimmer was able to clock a time under the FINA Time Qualification standard.
