Day four preliminary rounds of 2011 Australian Age Championships - Boys events
Morning session on day four of the 2011 Australian Age Championships consisted of the preliminary rounds of 100m butterfly, 200m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 100m back-stroke, 200m butterfly, 200m Individual Medley (IM), 400m freestyle and the 200m breast-stroke
in different age groups.
The session began with the 17-18yrs 100m butterfly, where 18-year-old Christopher Raven appeared as the fastest qualifying swimmer into the finals, clocking a time of 55.16 seconds. His time was only 0.05 seconds ahead of the Trinity’s Kenneth To, who touched
the wall second in a time of 55.21 seconds. They were both followed by Mackay’s Justin James in a time of 55.38 seconds.
Next was the 16yrs 200m freestyle, where the arena enjoyed the glazing swim of NZL’s Core Main, posting 1:54.81 minutes for the top qualification spot. Cameron McEvoy and Woden Hugo Morris followed him into the finals as the second and third fastest swimmers
in 1:55.25 and 1:56.17 minutes, respectively.
Moments later, Van Westing of Knox Pymble displayed his swimming skills in the 14-year-old 50m freestyle. With his fastest heat timings, Westing was only 0.02 seconds ahead of the second finisher, Angus Hannan, who finished in 24.71 seconds. They were followed
by Edward Marks of MLC Marlins in 24.82 seconds.
In the 15yrs 100m back-stroke, Alexander Graham of Kevins dominated the heats with his miraculous 58.55 seconds effort. Gladstone’s Alex Williams and Peters Westers’s Yan Tkachenko qualified as the second and third fastest swimmers in a time of 59.54 and
59.60 seconds, respectively.
Later, 13-year-old Damian Fyfe of City of Perth emerged as the fastest swimmer to enter the final of 200m butterfly. Fyfe clocked a time of 2:15.05 minutes and was slightly ahead of the Fairymead’s Kyle Rethamel, who touched home in 2:15.64 minutes.
Trinity’s Kenneth demonstrated his dynamic skills in the 17-18yrs 200m IM. Kenneth published a time of 2:06.84 seconds to earn the fastest qualification spot while his closest competitor, Mackay’s Justin James, touched the wall in 2:06.87 minutes. James
was followed by Tigersharks’ Matson Lawson in a time of 2:08.69 minutes.
After a while, 14-year-old Mack Horton of Melbourne materialised as the top contender for the gold medal in the 400m freestyle. Horton finished his swim in a magnificent time of 4:07.72 minutes, ahead of the Australian Crawl’s Mitch Phillips and Cyms St
Edmund’s Hayden Rea, who touched home in 4:07.91 and 4:13.73 minutes, respectively.
Finally, Jordan Chivers of Tritons ruled the 16yrs 200m breast-stroke in a time of 2:21.66 minutes and was followed by Lennard Bremer and Jake Packard, who reported in 2:23.53 and 2:24.27 minutes, respectively.
The finals of the same events will be conducted in the next session, where the deserving athletes will occupy the podiums for their efforts.
