Day getaways around the New York area?

Question

This includes Long Island, New Jersey or anywhere close where I can travel with a friend in a bus or train. I want to go to a nice beach area that isn't that public and have some fun. Any other ideas would be great. Just somewhere easy to access. Does anyone have any good ideas?

The Jersey Coast Line takes you to some Jersey beaches.  You can get to Belmar, Bradley Beach, Long Branch and others.

I always wanted to try the ferry from Manhattan to Sandy Hook.
