My boyfriend is traveling to Mexico and is leaving on the 26th. He will be there for the day of the dead celebration. Is there anything that he can or shouldn't do so that he doesn't offend anyone? Also, will he be able to bring back souvenirs or will they not make it back through us customs?

  1. it depends where he is going if he goes to a really small town and starts playing around with a "pumkin mask" he will get punched in the face.;) remember its nothing like in another world he just needs to remember to respect other peoples' beliefs. im from mexico and almost no one really celebrats el dia de muertos but it will definetly will depend where he is going

  2. The most colorful annual festival on the Mexican calendar, commemorating departed loved ones. During this festival, the dead have divine permission to visit friends and relatives on earth. The living welcome the souls of the departed with offerings incorporating their favorite foods and beverages.   You can get souvenirs and just respect the gravesites

  3. There' no exact rule for that day of what not to do, as always just common sense, not make fun of any cultural displays. I don't think it will be any problem to carry souvenir back, specially recomend the Sugar skulls.

  4. Depending on what cities he will be in, there will be lots of commemorative altars on display in public buildings.  As long as he doesn't get drunk and stupid and wander into a cemetery where visitors are communing with their dead loved ones, he'll be fine. Day of the Dead souvenirs are quite commonly made for the tourist trade, easy to bring back.

  5. Oaxaca has nice d.o.t.d. celebrations.

Mexican drugs won't make it back through customs.

  6. There is not much that can be done to offend someone just because it is Day of the Dead. Especially if he isn't hanging out in cemetaries. If he is invited to the home of someone who has a Day of the Dead offering altar set up in the home he should feel free to ask any questions I am sure his hosts would love to answer.

The worst thing he could do is make fun of the custom or make disparaging remarks. After that tell him to not take anything from any of the offereings that he ,might see-all the food, drinks, smokes ,candies, etc are for dead people!

He can take back any souvenir that is not forbidden by the U.S. Departments of Treasury and State or similar ministries of whatever country he will return to.

  7. he can bring back souvenirs as long as they are not meat products.  or illegal substances.  or cuban cigars.

i can't think of anything out of the ordinary that he shouldn't do.  i mean, there are lots of things a person shouldn't do...but as long as he's normal and acts normally, i can't think of anything special.

i'll think he's find, depending on where he is...that he'll barely notice the celebration.  or if he's in the right city, he may notice it quite a bit!
