Day one morning session: 2011 Irish Long Course National Championships - Men’s events
Morning session of first day of the 2011 Irish Long Course National Championships concluded yesterday at the National Aquatic Centre. The championship is a four-day competition and it will conclude after the completion of swimming events on May 1, 2011.
The session concluded with the heats of the 50m breast-stroke, 200m freestyle 100m back-stroke, 200m butterfly and the time final of 1500m freestyle in the Men’s category.
The session began with the Men’s 50m breast-stroke, where ARDS’s Michael Dawson demonstrated his spectacular swim to qualify as the fastest swimmer into the semi-final. Dawson touched the wall in 29.92 seconds ahead of the MAL’s Emmet Crowley and DOL’s John
P Quinn, who touched the wall in 30.79 and 31.38 seconds to qualify as the second and third fastest swimmer into the semi-final.
Next was the 200m freestyle, where NM DV’s Seamus Stacey proved his eligibility for the fastest qualification spot, clocking a time of 1:56.58 minutes. ARDS’s Curtis Coulter and Dol’s Sean Leahy followed him on the finishing wall as the second and third
fastest swimmers, clocking a time of 1:56.83 and 1:56.84 minutes respectively.
Moments later, PORT’s Karl Burdis occupied the fastest qualification seat in the Men’s 100m back-stroke by touching the wall first in 57.19 seconds. His time was only 0.76 seconds ahead of his following swimmer, Colm Dowling of KILK-IRL, who posted a time
of 57.95 seconds. NAC’s 15-year-old Brian O’ Sullivan secured third fastest spot, reporting in a time of 59.83 seconds.
After few moments, Niall Wynn of ST conquered the top qualification spot in the 200m butterfly final. Wynn touched the wall in a fastest time of 2:04.47 minutes ahead of the PORT’s Jack Cobain and GAL’s Cian Duffy, who finished their swims in 2:09.38 and
2:09.55 minutes to qualify as the second and third fastest swimmers.
The last event of the session was time final of Men’s 1500m freestyle, where LEA’s Conor Donnelly had a comfortable win by touching the wall in 16:09.35 minutes. 19-year-old Donnelly was three seconds ahead of the ALS’s Conor Turner, who earned the silver
medal in a time of 16:12.13 minutes. ENS-IRL’s Christopher Bryan followed them on the podium for the bronze medal, clocking a time of 16:16.93 minutes and was comfortably ahead of the fourth finisher, ATH’s Brendan Gibbons, who ended his swim in 16:21.01 minutes.
The championship is also a trial basis for the national swimmers to enter the Irish Swimming Team to compete at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai this July, while the names of the swimmers will be announced after the completion of championship on
Sunday.
