Day one of the 2011 Arafura Games: 15-16yrs Swimming events
Morning session of day one of the 2011 Arafura Games concluded on May 8, 2011 after the preliminary rounds of 15-16yrs age groups swimmers. The arena enjoyed gruelling efforts of young swimmers, trying to occupy the fastest qualification spots in their respective
events.
The session started with the Girl’s 200m Individual Medley (IM), where Hannah Dato of Philippines occupied the fastest qualification seat for tonight’s final, touching the wall in 2:34.01 minutes. Deborah Cronsteadt of New Caledonia and Caitlyn James of
West Australia followed her on the finishing wall with a timing of 2:39.27 and 2:40.96 minutes, respectively.
In the Boy’s equivalent event, Robert Gerlach of Queensland displayed a magnificent swim of 2:17.46 minutes to capture the fastest qualification spot. His team-member, 15-year-old Mark Ragel, was only two seconds behind him and touched the wall for second
fastest qualification in 2:19.64 minutes. After few seconds, NT’s Anthony Stutz emerged as the third fastest qualifying swimmer, with a timing of 2:26.26 minutes.
Next event of the session was Girl’s 50m back-stroke, where 16-year-old Dato once again qualified as the fastest swimmer, cruising her way to the finishing wall in 32.78 seconds. Kiah Hazel and Stevie Nibbs of NT proved their second and third fastest qualifications
by clocking a time of 32.80 and 33.73 seconds, respectively.
Similarly, in the Boy’s category, Gerlach once again dominated the event by posting a time of 28.11 seconds. Gerlach was followed by his team member, Ragel and NT’s Benjamin Fuller, who touched the wall in 29.08 and 29.84 seconds, to secure second and third
fastest qualification, respectively.
The last event of the session was 100m butterfly, where Miranda Cowley and Ratih Puspasari demonstrated a close swimming combat. Cowley produced a wonderful swim of 1:10.58 minutes to out-touch Puspasari by 0.14 seconds. Puspasari followed him on the finishing
wall, posting a time of 1:10.72 minutes. They were followed by Savannah Rossingh, who transpired as the third fastest qualifying swimmer in 1:11.07 minutes.
The finals of the same events will be conducted in the evening session, where the winners will reach the podium for their magnificent swims.
