Day trip in eastern France?

I am studying abroad in Fribourg, Switzerland (south of Bern) and want to do a day trip (or 2) somewhere in France close to the border. Where could I go?

Head to Geneva and over the border to the beautiful Savoie region of France.

Mulhouse is close to Bâle/Basel, and although it's not special, the surrounding Alsatian region is beautiful.

For a day trip you should be able to get to Lyon, a beautiful city with terrific food; or Strasbourg; or Dijon.  And I hope you're spending some time looking around Switzerland too while you're there.  It's a country with so much variety, and so much to see.
