Day trips from Geneva?

I'm temporarily in Geneva and I have a weekend free. If I could use the weekend to have two day trips, where should I go? I don't want to spend too much time on buses or trains

  1. I would go from Geneve by train to Chamonix - its one of the higher mountains (in the area but its the French side of the border) on a nice day the sight is awesome. I would not go to Basel, its too far for one day trip neither to Bern, but stay at the southern side of Switzerland maybe go see the Matterhorn (if you decide against Chamonix).

  2. Interlaken is a beautiful and diverse area. From there you can visit the Jungfrau and numerous valleys, Montreux, Castle of Chillion. Have a GREAT time!

  3. I recommend taking the train, it's an awesome means of transportation in Switzerland and neighboring countries.

You could cross the border and go to Lyon in France.

You could take the train (first the regular, then a smaller one) up the hill to Zermatt/Matterhorn, the famous mountain the movie trailers.

I definitely recommend going to Bern and Zurich just to check out various museums. You could then go back to Zurich by way of Basel (Bale) and see museums in that city as well.

Then there are other more remote regions, like visiting Gruyere.

And one time you may want to go down to the south of Switzerland to visit Lugano, the Italian speaking town.

The train rides are absolutely beautiful in that country so they're worth it. They don't take more than a couple of hours between any city though, it's a small city.

I used to do a lot of this, it's really fun!
