Next year I'm going to be staying in Rome for a few months. I'm on a budget, but I still want to see as much as possible while there. What are some inexpensive day trips I could take out of Rome? Pompeii is on my to see list...any other places in particular?

Thank you!

  1. In addition to the other suggestions is Assissi. It is a beautiful little town. And Pergugia. Upper Perugia is charming & you get to walk through a midevil castle to get there & lower Perugia is the home of the oldest college in the world.

    Have a blast!

  2. check with your hotel concierge. the last time i was in rome, there was a two day trip from rome to naples then a hydrofoil to the island of capri and then a hydrofoil to sorrento (over night stay). the next morning the bus trip back to rome in pompeii before returning to rome.

  3. do you like art? my mum like Rome she like the art work over there?

  4. Previous suggestions are all good but for day trips (places you can get to and back in under a day) from Rome are:

    Ostia Antica

    Tivoli

    Villa D'Estes

    Hadrian's Villa

    Herculaneum and Pompeii

Get a travel guide- I like the DK Publishing ones the best. They have a guide for all of Italy and several other ones just for Rome. I love Rome. It's my favorite place. I've been 3 times so far and am going back in August to see a friend.

Have fun- it's the best place to see. The people are wonderful, the food great and the sights are unbelievable. There is plenty to do and see in Rome that won't cost you a fortune.

Visit www.virtualtourist.com. Click on their travel pages and select Rome- you can then read a ton of helpful hints from people who have been there.

  5. Ostia Antica & Assisi as others mentioned.  Ostia is much better than Pompeii.

Try and arrange tickets for the Scavi tour under St. Peters.

  6. Check out the catacombs, they make a nice day trip. To be honest though, I don't really like Rome. You should take a train and see the country. I'd say you should see Firenze. Great food and great history. But enjoy Rome.

  7. Florence is an easy day trip on the Eurostar, and you already have Pompeii on your list. One really interesting place is Tivoli - see Villa d'Este and Villa Adriana. To the north Orvieto is a short trip worth taking. You can also easily go to Capri for a day from Rome on the train. Arezzo is further north and has an interesting old town. If you're there at this time of year, there's a Giostra twice a year that's interesting. The neighborhoods all dress in medieval costume and compete in a joust. The 1st one this year is Sunday. Perugia is also very nice - especially if you're there during the Umbria Jazz Fest or the Eurochocolate festival.
