Day two morning session: 2011 Irish long Course Championships - Men’s events
Day two preliminary rounds of the 2011 Irish Long Course Championships witnessed great performances of the Irish national swimmers at the National Aquatic Centre in Abbottstown on April 29, 2011.
The session sighted dominating swims of Luke Campbell, Michael Dawson, Niall Wynn and Matthew Coward, occupying the fastest qualification spots in their events whereas Conor Donnelly claimed the gold medal
in the 800m freestyle time-final.
The session started with the Men’s 100m freestyle, where Luke Campbell of BAN emerged as the fastest swimmer into the finals, clocking a time of 52.84 seconds. ARDS’s Curtis Coulter followed him into the
final as the second fastest swimmer, posting 53.58 seconds. the third fastest qualification spot was secured by NY&MN’s Brian O’ Sullivan, who touched the wall in 53.86 seconds. Kilk’s David Prendergast settled fourth fastest swimmer in a time of 54.00 seconds.
Next was the Men’s 100m breast-stroke, where the ARDS”s Michael Dawson displayed a wonderful swim of 1:04.89 minutes to earn the top qualification seat. He was followed by CBAR’s Nicholas Quinn and MAL’s
Emmet Crowley, who settled second and third with a timing of 1:06.32 and 1:06.82 minutes. SWSC’s Dan Sweeney and DOL’s John P Quinn followed Crowley in the final with a timing of 1:07.31 and 1:08.17 minutes, respectively.
In the 400m IM, Niall Wynn enormously defeated his closest rival, Paul Wudtke. ST P’s Wynn surfaced as the fastest swimmer with a timing of 4:32.61 minutes ahead of the POS-GER’s Wudtke, who finished his
swim in 4:35.61 minutes for the second fastest qualification. Nicholas Quinn of CBAR ended third by touching the wall in a time of 4:40.29 minutes. He was followed by Conor Donnelly and Sean O’ Brien, who managed fourth and fifth fastest qualification in a
time of 4:42.01 and 4:44.11 minutes, respectively.
Moments later, Matthew Coward displayed an astounding swim of 26.47 seconds to conquer the top qualification berth. COR’s Coward out-touched his closest competitor, TROJ’s Eoin Gray, by 0.32 seconds. Gray
touched the wall in 26.79 seconds and was 0.37 faster than his following swimmer, ESB’s Sam McGlynn, who finished third in a time of 27.16 seconds. TEMP-LE’s Salim Sebaoui remained only 0.11 seconds away from McGlynn and clocked 27.27 seconds for the fourth
fastest qualification.
Then, Conor Donnelly conquered the last event of the morning session, 800m freestyle time-final. Donnelly pocketed the gold medal for the 800m event in a time of 8:26.54 minutes. His time was comfortable
ahead of his closest rival, ATH’s Brendan Gibbons, who touched the wall for silver medal in 8:29.64 minutes. NM DV’s Seamus Stacey followed them on the podium for the bronze medal, clocking a time of 8:30.69 minutes.
The championship will continue for two more days and will conclude on May 1, 2011 after the completion of all swimming events
