DayZ gets the Greenlight – Video Games Update
Dean ‘Rocket’ Hall, the developer behind that popular ArmA 2 Zombie Survival Mod DayZ, has revealed that DayZ is finally getting the standalone release that fans have been begging for.
This announcement comes shortly after the news that the DayZ mod has finally managed to accumulate a million plus install base and the best part about it is that it continues to grow every day. With such a large fan-base, Bohemia Interactive, the developers
behind ArmA 2, would’ve been mad not to fund the standalone version of the game.
However the road won’t be easy for Hall as ‘The War Z’ has also been revealed to be in development by Hammerpoint.
Hammerpoint has even admitted that they have made many design changes in the War Z which were inspired by the success of the DayZ mod (the changes probably included the game's name as well).
Even though there is no specific release date for the War Z, it could steal all of DayZ’s thunder if it manages to hit the shelves before the standalone DayZ does.
On the bright side, Hall has stated that the decision to develop a standalone game will not affect the DayZ mod in any way by saying, “Development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing
the mod now will be able to continue to do so."
Dean has revealed on the official DayZ site that he will be the project lead on the DayZ game but has not stated if he still owns the rights to the Intellectual Property (IP) or have they been handed over to Bohemia Interactive.
Hall has also revealed that the standalone DayZ will have a brand new website where as the mod will continue to use the old official webpage. The team is going for the Minecraft approach when it comes to charging for the game. This means that earlier alpha
versions of the game will be available to the public for a lower price which will increase gradually as the game development continues into beta and then the final build.
The question is that what if gamers refuse to support the standalone version of the game and decide to just stick with the free mod for ArmA 2? Will Hall discontinue the mod in the future just to promote the final game? Gamers will have to wait and see how
the story develops.
