Question:

Daycare won't pay workers?

My mom has been working at this daycare for about eight months and in the last month her manager has changed thier payment scedule from every Friday to every two weeks. That's fine, but then she changed it to the 1st and 15th also fine, but she's not following her own scedule! She seems to just be paying a week here and a week here when she feels like it. She's already three weeks behind in payment. I just had to loan my mom $100 dollars so she wouldn't be overdrawn on her insurance payment from the school (were she works "full-time" during the school year. She works at the daycare after school and during summer. Is there anything she can do? It's ridiculus not knowing when you're going to be paid! She doesn't have any money right now, and I really can't afford to give her any because I have college tuition coming up next month.

  1. Your Mom's first option is to go to the manager and tell her that she needs her paycheck when it is promised. If that fails, tell your mom to contact the local/state/federal labor relations board. They should be able to give her advice based on labor laws.

    Good luck!

  2. There are laws about this kind of thing. Have your mother contact the Labor Dept. office nearest you. In the meantime, I'd find another job!

  3. tell mom not to bother going to the owner/director as she's had plenty of time to pay her.  at this point she needs to contact the fair labor board, eeoc and the state's attorney general and get them involved.  they need to pay her the back wages plus interest and any fees associated with filing.  don't mess with this woman.

  4. Yes your mom needs a different after school and summer job. She also needs to contact the district attorneys office and the better business bureau. Maybe even let a TV or radio station know what is happening at the day care. We work hard in this profession and we are important to society and this is not fair to the teachers.

  5. It's good to know my day care isn't the only one with these ridiculous issues. Our owner routinely bounces our payroll checks--we've filed police reports and contacted attorneys, who have said there really isn't much we can do. My advice is for your mom to look for a new job. That's what I'm doing!
