My son is 11 months and is about to transition into the one-twos room at daycare. They told me this morning that they wont feed his oatmeal to him in the morning. I don't know why. They told me to bring in little pancakes and waffles, but that is junk! Any suggestions on foods my son can eat with his fingers for a highchair beside cherrios??? Thanks.

  1. Toast or bagel, gerber puffs, fruit, yogort (although will be messy), there are other whole grain cereal he could eat as well, my daughter loved cereal bars at his age, actually she still does, scrambled egg yolks with bits of ham.

I would almost be tempted to bring the oatmeal anyway, perhaps bring one of those starter spoons with it and a change of clothes.

I would be looking at a different daycare facility that will be able to meet your needs.  A home based daycare might give you more one on one personalized care.  They have agencies that recommend home daycare providers as well.

    Good luck!

  2. You can get pancakes and waffles for him that aren't junk.

Look for whole grain waffles, organic perhaps...

Organic pancakes with fruit in them.

You can feed your kids healthy things that are finger foods.

Another thing you can do for finger foods would be sending french toast made with whole grain bread and cut up pieces of bite sized fruit.

My twins haven't spoon fed since they were like 9 months old.

  3. Its your child and you choose what goes into his body and if they dont respect your wishes then threaten to transfur to another day care. they just dont want to feed that to him because its a mess to clean up rather then pancakes and waffles . remember they arent in charge you are

  4. Cut up fruit pieces with some sort of protein, or you can can make pancakes with oatmeal in them.

  5. I am not understanding why they will not feed him the oatmeal but along with the little pancakes and such you could give fruits.

  6. Remind them that you are paying them to look after your son. They obviously can't be bothered spoon feeding him. How about banana? That is a brilliant finger food and would be a great start to the day.

  7. Sliced fruit....... just a bring a banana....... or a few slices of melon.... oravocadoo.

God...... I wold be pissed if they told me to bring in pancakes and waffles........ that is a HORRIBLE breakfast for babies to have every morning.  Once in a while is fine..... but everyday.... h**l no.  No wonder American has a obesity problem.

  8. Wait a minute.  You get to decide what your baby eats not the daycare.  That's why God choose YOU to be the mom.  If you want your baby to have oatmeal then tell them to give him his oatmeal!

  9. I would consider a new facility if they cannot find it in themselves to feed him the nutritional food you provide for him.  Just because they want him to have finger foods so they don't have to feed him doesn't mean he should be subjected to junk.  I would talk to the director.

  10. i wouldnt adjust my child's diet.

i would find a new daycare

    thats c**p!!!

  11. Pancakes and waffles don't have to be junk. There are some EXCELLENT healthy pancake recipes out there, made from whole wheat flour and other quality ingredients--you can make them at home and freeze them yourself, and send them with fruit already cut up, ready to go!

You also don't have to stick strictly with breakfast foods. You can send anything that's healthy and bite-sized.

  12. How about feeding him the oatmeal in the morning before you leave home?  Then send some Cheerios, sliced bananas or other fruit and a cup of milk/juice/formula for him to snack on in the highchair.

I don't see sending in pancakes and waffles because eating those cold is just unappetizing.  Yuck.

I would guess that in the Ones-Twos room, the ratio of caregivers to children is lower, and they just don't have enough hands to spoonfeed all the children.

  13. I would most likely consider another facility.  It is their responsibility to feed and care for children.  If you bring the food, they should be able to serve it.  I would be leery of waffles and pancakes at that age because, while your child is old enough to eat them, they need to be small pieces and he'd have to be watched constantly to make sure he doesn't choke on the dry food.

If that isn't an option, then they do have Gerber Graduates breakfast bars and that would be good with a banana or mashed peach.

    Good luck!

  14. What's wrong with waffles and pancakes?  I buy frozen multigrain banana waffles for my son, and I don't consider them junk.  I'd get him pancakes, but I'm still waiting to introduce eggs.

If you'd prefer, you can always make up your own, sweetened with applesauce, bananas or other fruit, or not sweetened at all, as you choose.  You can then freeze them (I use wax paper to keep them separate), and keep in a freezer bag.

  15. I used to work in a child care setting and children were not allowed to bring in their own food because of health concerns (prepared incorrectly at home, etc.) but the fact that they encourage you to bring something else from home rather than oatmeal is absolutely ridiculous. It sounds to me like your day care is lazy and doesn't want to have to deal with any sort of mess. Obviously pancakes would be easier for them but they have less nutritional value. I think I would begin looking for another day care provider who cares more about the well being and health of your child and less about messes.

  16. actually, there are some really good whole grain waffles and pancakes in the frozen food isle that don't have any added preservatives, etc.

Besides those, you can get whole grain breads, whole grain english muffins, yogurt to dip in, fresh fruits.
