Dayron Robles to lead Cuban squad at the World Championships – IAAF World Athletics Championships
As per information released by the National Information Agency in Havana, Dayron Robles, the 24-year-old track and field athlete, who specialises in 110m hurdles, will be leading the Cuban squad at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Daegu, later this
month.
Providing details, Aurelio Romero, the National Commissioner said, “The squad will be led by Robles, Olympic champion in the 110m hurdles and the world record holder in Beijing 2008, and Yargelis Savigne, world champion of the triple jump at Osaka 2007 and
Berlin 2009.”
Despite being young, Robles boasts of an impressive track record. The passionate athlete first came under the limelight back in 2006, when he bagged the 60m hurdle title at the 2006 World Indoor Championships. The year in which his talent on the track was
recognised saw him improving his outdoor Personal Best to an over-awing 13 seconds, which ensued in bringing the Central American and Caribbean Games Championships for him.
Continuously striving hard to raise the bar of his performance, the strenuous runner improved his Personal Best to 12.92 seconds next year and for doing so, he clinched the Pan American gold medal at the 2007 IAAF World Athletics meet. This new time clocked
by Robles placed him on fourth position among the fastest runners ever in the history of the discipline.
In 2008, the Cuban observed the pinnacle of his career by setting the world record of 12.87 seconds while running at the Golden Spike Ostrava. Once clocking a sub-13 effort, Robles always maintained his new fast time. While running at the 2008 Beijing Olympics,
he hit the finishing line in 12.93 seconds.
At the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships, the young runner stunned the world by marking the championships record. Running in Daegu, the Cuban star will look forward to add the only missing feather in his cap. Last week, while running in London, the hurdler
clocked a finish of 13.04 seconds and emerged against athletes like Jason Richardson and David Oliver.
While revealing names of other prominent athletes, Romero, the National Commissioner said that the squad also cherished having triple jumper, Savigne, Discus Thrower, Yarelis Barrios, 400m runner, William Collazo, Victory Moya, High Jumper, William Collazo,
decathlete, Leonel Saurez and javelin thrower, Guillermo Martinez along with Yanet Cruz.
Apparently, the contingent led by Robles seems formidable and stands good chances of bagging medals for the country, however, provided the form and fitness athletes from other countries are displaying, except Robles himself, it will not be easy for rest
of the lot to hit the championships title without putting in some real efforts. For the Cuban hurdler too, for bagging the event title, it will be imperative for him to unleash the best of his talent on the track.
