Daytona Beach Invitational 2012: Brooke Pancake takes second position in first round
American Brooke Pancake fired a 67 in the first round of Daytona Beach Invitational 2012 to take the second position on the leaderboard.
Pancake started her first round amid plenty of hype and media attention as she was determined to prove her mettle this time. The American star parred the first two holes and drained a birdie
on the difficult par-3 third hole.
Pancake, who boasts vast experience on the Symetra Tour, is being regarded as the strongest contender for the ongoing tournament as she has already vowed to clinch a victory this week.
Playing in immense pressure that came in the form of strong line-up, the American star did not give too many chances to her rivals and kept her momentum going till the final moments of the
first round.
On the sixth hole, Pancake’s fans had to face some disappointing moments as the star golfer failed to judge the ball on the greens of the difficult par-3 6th and she ended up carding
a bogey.
On the back nine, she improved her performance and made perfect strokes on almost all the holes. She stunned the spectators at Daytona Beach after she fired a birdie on the 11th
hole. She then drained another two birdies on the 13th and 18th hole.
Australian rookie Courtney Massey got off to a solid start as she shot a 66 to grab a lead.
Pancake recently became the Crimson Tide athlete after she was picked as a finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year.
The Alabama native has already been picked as the top female collegiate golfer in June 2012 under Honda Sports Award — something that helped her rise to fame.
She had expressed her feelings about the award, saying she could not believe that she managed to perform so well in NCAA-sanctioned events.
“I am ecstatic about the Honda Award. I honestly couldn't ask for a better way to cap off my collegiate career," Pancake said.
“I have been on cloud nine and hope to keep the joy and success going here in Scotland. I am honored to know I have left the University on such a high and am excited to see the future success
of the program”.
