The Manchester United shot stopper is pleased with the support that the fans have showed him and has vowed to improve even further.
A summer signing from Atletico Madrid, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-de-Gea-c10463 took longer than expected to establish himself as Edwin Van Der Sar’s successor at Old Trafford.
Replicating the legacy the Flying Dutchman had at the club was always going to be a momentous task, even for someone as hugely talented as the young Spaniard. And for most of the campaign, it seemed like the pressure of expectation had gotten to him.
Criticized for his error prone goalkeeping and his inability to keep out crosses, De Gea was eventually replaced in the starting line-up by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Anders-Lindegaard-c5553, who seemingly become Fergie’s number one to defend the posts.
However an injury kept the Dane on the sidelines for United’s visit to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 and that’s where the world witnessed the birth of a star.
De Gea was imperious on the night and at the very end produced a stunning save to deny Juan Mata a priceless injury time goal.
After the brilliant display, the keeper has continued his fine form and is now regarded as one of the club’s best players.
Such has been his consistency since then that many feel that the Reds should honour him by making him their player of the season. The La Roja International himself also spoke about this and claimed that he was delighted with the support the fans had showed
him.
“It is nice to know supporters are voting me,” he said.
“It is always a positive when the fans are behind you. It is something I can sense when I am on the field and makes me feel more relaxed."
“It is a source of extra motivation when you know the fans are right behind you and rooting for you. But all that aside, it is just a case of getting your head down, keep working hard and making sure you do have a continuous improvement all the time.”
While De Gea has since proved Ferguson that he does not need a replacement at the back, there is still a while to go before he can match Van Der Sar in terms of his effectiveness on the pitch.
Nonetheless, his career is on an upward path and he could be counted in the same breath as other United greats, if he continues this way.
