De Villiers determined to continue wicket-keeping duties – Cricket News Update
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 in the upcoming three-match Test series.
The Proteas’ limited-overs captain had been sidelined for three weeks following his team’s exit from the World T20, after he sustained a double injury blow (lower back and ankle) due to the extensive workload he carried following the premature retirement of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 tour in July.
He donned the gloves for his country in the three Tests, and followed that up by leading the side in the subsequent ODIs and T20Is of the trip before further sharing the added responsibility in the mega T20 event.
Mohammed Moosajee, the team manager, had confirmed that the player will miss the Champions League T20 campaign ( eventually won by Sydney Sixers) in a bid to get fit for an important tour Down Under. Despite concerns still lingering over his wide-range responsibilities for the national team, De Villiers has asserted his desire to carry on performing the wicket-keeping duty, while further batting at the all important no.5 position when the series commences from November 9.
He further admitted that the back problem remains a serious worry but given the demanding schedule, he is adamant in contributing to the team in every way possible. His donning of the gloves allows the Proteas to play a specialist batsman at no.7, a position currently held by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JP-Duminy-c1742.
"They [the media] have made a massive thing out of it. My back's not fractured and there are no missing bones. I've needed rest," de Villiers said."It has been an issue for a long time now. It's something I've got to look after and manage really well for the next few years. I don't believe the keeping has played a massive part in that.
“I've felt a similar kind of thing with my back when I'm fielding. It's not really the wicketkeeping. I've worked even harder in the field. It has been a few years coming now that this back [problem] has been developing into something serious. That's why I needed a few weeks at home.”
The South African team will first take part in a three-day warm game against Australia A, which takes place at the SCG from tomorrow.
