De Villiers eager to topple the Kiwis -- Cricket News Update

The skipper of South Africa, AB de Villiers, on his arrival to Wellington, said that his team is eager to perform well against New Zealand in the upcoming series, starting from Feb 17, 2012.

The right handed batsman said that the Black Caps are very smart players who can win in any situation, but is confident that his team can prosper against the inform hosts. "They're very street-smart and they think on their feet, but hopefully we'll be the
smarter team in the upcoming series," De Villiers said.

De Villiers also lamented his side’s disappointing World Cup campaign (after they were knocked out by NZ in the quarter finals of the mega competition), but further stated that they are capable of winning against any team in the world. “We are a new unit
with fresh faces. We play a different kind of cricket to what we have in the last few years”, said De Villiers.

South Africa, under their new ODI captain, had a very successful summer at home where they defeated the Lankans in the five-match series by a 3-2 margin.

However, New Zealand themselves have moved from strength to strength, destroying Zimbabwe in the recently concluded series - leaving the minnows without a single victory in all formats of the game.

Both teams will be gearing to overpower each other and the touring party’s Head Coach, Gary Kirsten is hopeful of a non-controversial encounter, considering their last match (World Cup) resulted in an ugly verbal spat, which the host country won. The memories
of that match will still be ripe for both teams.

"If New Zealand feels that they want to get verbal with us, that's their business. The side that plays better cricket is going to win," said Gary.

The International series will begin with three T20s, followed by a three-match One Day series before Graeme Smith will resume his duties in the longer version.

South Africa are currently positioned 2nd in the ICC Test Team rankings behind England but this could all change if they manage to defeat the hosts by a 3-0 margin.
