De Vries, Aranburu and Andre advance to Round 5 at Mr Price Pro Ballito – Surfing news
South Africa’s Beyrick De Vries, Basque Country’s Aritz Aranburu and Brazil’s Jadson Andre made the Round 5 (Round of 16) cut at the third of eight events on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime calendar, Mr Price Pro Ballito, by clinching
victory in their respective Round 4 (Round of 24) heats that went down at Ballito, South Africa.
De Vries got the better of Portugal’s Marlon Lipke in the third heat of Round 4 to secure his place in the next round, while bringing the competition to a premature end for his rival in the process.
The fourth heat saw Aranburu claim a win over Australia’s Thomas Woods, though just barely, to successfully extend his life in the competition, while forcing his rival out of the contention for the event title.
Andre finished on top of South Africa’s Dylan Lightfoot in the fifth heat to go through into the next round. The latter, however, found himself eliminated from the competition after his second successive failure to register a win.
With powerful, two-metre waves on offer at the main event site on day 5 of the competition, the surfers put on an exciting performance as they continued to battle it out for survival and a place in the fifth round.
The third heat pitted De Vries and Lipke in a man-on-man battle for the Round 5 place. As the battle got underway, the South African surfer got to work early and managed to post a 6.83 on the score-board of his first business-wave. He soon added an additional
6.07 points to his account, thus getting to a heat-total of 12.90 point.
Lipke evidently struggled to find his rhythm and consequently only managed to earn ordinary scores off his top-two waves, thus registering a heat-total of 8.06 points.
The fourth heat saw Aranburu walk away with the win despite getting off to a very slow start. The Basque Country-based surfer went through a series of modest waves before finding a 5.83 and 6.10-point ride in the dying minutes of the heat, thus finishing
with a heat-total of 11.93 points.
Woods finished with a heat-total of 11.63 points, thus getting forced to surrender victory and consequently the Round 5 spot to his rival.
Andre put on an amazing performance during his bout with Lightfoot in the fifth heat to secure his place in the next round. The Brazilian surfer locked a juicy wave halfway through the heat to earn a 9.00 off it and went on to back it up with a 7.50-point
ride later, thus finishing with a decisive heat-total of 16.50 points.
Lightfoot finished with a heat-total of 9.34 points, thus getting eliminated from the competition.
