Question:

De-wormer for tortoises - Mebendazole(vermox) or fenbedazole?

They do not sell fenbedazole where I leave. I have been told NUMEROUS times that they do not import them anymore. But I have been suggested to use Vermox (mebendazole), would this work to deworm my tortoises? Is it good? If so, is it better than fendbadozole, equal or less effective?

Thanks!

  1. They are in the same class of drugs and have quite similar spectrums of activity and safety margins. The dosage recommendation for mebendazole is quite a bit lower then for fenbendazole, only 20 - 25 mg/kg as opposed to 50 - 100 mg/ kg for fenbendazole.

Never let a vet prescribe or advise the use of Ivermectin with your tortoises, it can be fatal to them.

  2. what about for Aquatic turtles?

  3. I've always used Panacur/Fenbendazole to worm my reptiles.  It's a very safe dewormer, so I would stick with that if I were you.

  4. I dewormed mine with Fenbendazole (Panacur). Fortunately there is no overdose level with it, so it is safe to use by the average keeper, provided you know your reptile has worms and you have read up on how to use it. I dewormed my adult Russian tortoises and my savannah monitors, and they have become more active and healthier since I did so. Panacur can be ordered from the following links:

  5. Use the Vermox
