DeMeco Ryans out for the season
Houston Texans middle linebacker, DeMeco Ryans will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn Achilles tendon in his left leg.
The incident occurred just before half-time in the Texans 35-31 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, October 17. Ryans jumped and fell awkwardly on the turf during the Chiefs' 17-yard pass and catch for a touchdown by Dwayne Bowe. Ryans lay on the
turf for several minutes while being examined by trainers and medical staff before getting carted off the field.
"It is tough," Ryans said. "It was heartbreaking to hear the news that you're done for the season."
"I was planting to go make a play on the ball. I was trying to jump up and I couldn't push off my foot."
Head coach Gary Kubiak reports that Ryans will have surgery in the next couple of days to repair the injury.
The injury leaves a gaping hole in a defence that has struggled quite a bit this season.
"He's the guy that leads our defence," Texans defensive coordinator Frank Bush. "He does everything for us. With him going down, it's going to be tough. We can't replace him. We've just got to try to move on with the guys that we have." So the loss of Ryans
is a big hit for the Texans, and it will now be up to the offence to carry the load.
"You really can't replace DeMeco," Texans receiver Andre Johnson said. "His nickname is Captain ... so that goes to show you what he means to this football team. For us to lose him, it makes you feel like you can't catch a break. We just have to have some
guys step up."
Ryans, a former second-round draft pick, and the 2006 defensive rookie of the year, finishes the season with 54 tackles and one sack.
