Question:

Dead Bolt Locks?

I live in an apartment complex and my lease will be up toward the ending of this month. But I have an annoying friend that has access to my house. I've already contacted the front office to see if they'd be able to change the locks, but I wouldn't want to pay $45 to change a lock I'd never have to use in just a couple of weeks. There is also more than entry to the apartment, so if I had to change it myself, I'd need 2 of the same locks (which is also a waste of money). I wanted to know if there was a way I'd be able to refrain the lock from turning. I've tried tying a cord around the back of the lock, but doesn't work unless I'm pulling down on it. Does anyone know of a good inexpensive trick/way to refrain the lock from turning?

  1. I am not sure of your configuration.  However, if a cord works, provided you are providing tension, a bunji should work, i.e., its elasticity should provide the required tension.

  2. Just throwing out other ideas, A furring strip on an angle from the floor to the deadbolt might be workable.

  3. For like 15 to 20 bucks you can pick up a two deadbolt pack and install it yourself.  You'll get the two deadbolts and two to four keys.  Spendin' the money kinda sucks, but it'll keep your friend out

  4. Tell your friend you need the key back because your lease is almost up.

  5. Go to the hardware store. There is a small flip latch you can put on back door jam to keep the door closed and locked. Even if they open door lock it won't let them open the door.

You can go to Radio Shack and buy a door alarm for front door. It attaches to door jam and edge of door. When the door is opened it beeps for a few seconds until you enter the right code to turn it off..if not...it sounds an alarm in your apartment. This will keep that person out....it might scare the c**p out of them. When you move you can take the alarm with you....that way you are only out the $3 for the back latch which by law you are suppose to leave.
