Dead Fish Question?

Okay now this is a bit wierd. I haven't been spending much time at home lately but I come home every single day after work to feed my fish. I have a couple platys and what not community fish and 2 plecos one large orange one and one medium black/gray spotted one. Well probably 2 or 3 days ago I came home and the black/ gray one is suckin on the glass like he normally is. Yesterday I come home and his skeleton is on the floor of the tank, everything else is deteriorated. How is it possible for him to have died and deteriorated in that short amount of time? (also I had done a good water change about a week ago, and only different thing about the tank was I added 3 plants, which one had also deteriorated so I pulled them all out.) Anyone? I have never seen a full blown fish go from alive and happy to dead and gone in 2-3 days.

  1. Well. I  heard if you put too much cleaner/deteriorated stuff the fish will die. And it may have been dead before. Because they don't really stay at the bottom for that long. Also it dies and the other fish could have eaten him. Sad. I know. But it has happened before. And was the tank dirty? That could do it.

  2. Um...I don't know much about plecos, but it may have eaten his tank mate.

  3. it is normal,my fish dye in a day some times. He was probably shocked or just old.It is natural for fish to dye(its apart of life).I think you fish was not as strong so the other fish started picking at him and ate his body. When my fish dye i see the other fish eating him.I had the same thing happen to me.Don't worry just buy another won and every thing will be OK.

  4. The other fish ate it's remains.  As to why he died, who knows.  Could've been from the water quality if that plant had died and rotted, it would've put out some ammonia.  Could've been internal bacterial or parasites as well.  Hard to say when you don't see symptoms, and even then, it's still difficult.

  5. What exactly type of fishes other than the platys and the pleco do you have? Because fishes don't disappear to skeleton within 2 or 3 days, it usually takes awhile for it to become skeletons.

The only fishes that I can think of that can do such damage is piranhas, pufferfishes, or any fish with sharp teeth like freshwater barracuda, Gars, and other fishes that I haven't yet mentioned.

If you have pufferfishes, they tend to group together and tear their prey apart. I've seen it happen and it is possible.

That is why I am asking you what exactly type of fishes do you have in your tank, because fishes with an aggressive nature with very sharp teeth is an explanation for your fish being eaten to the bones.

I hope this helps, thanks for asking................

  6. the other fish probably like tried to eat it or something
