Deal Making strikes back after three years among older horses to win the Robellino Stakes for trainer Graham Motion
The 6-year-old gelding, Deal Making won his first race since 2008 for trainer Graham Motion in the $75,000 Robellino Stakes at Penn National on the evening of 5 August.
Over at a distance of 1 1/16 miles, jockey Jeremy Rose took the gelding up against older Pennsylvania-breds and didn’t Deal Making take the older lot seriously.
The pair broke off good from the gates on the field of eight, as Jeremy Rose kept the gelding off the place early in the race and kept him along rail.
Other horses were trying to save ground too, and suddenly the field had come alive when the pace setter was over taken.
Jeremy read the cue early and tried to angle out Deal Making on the outside in order to seek some extra room for his gelding to make his final run.
The run became a little awkward when quite a few horses looked to do the same and the timing couldn’t be that bad.
Finally entering into the stretch, the pair inevitably got some day light to shoot out for the wire. Deal Making was hunting off Roadhog, who was making his move by detaching himself from the rest of the lot, and he was making good fractions.
With 20 yards to go, Deal Making rallied harder to take the lead from Roadhog as he got beaten by a very good horse by a margin of half a length. Saco River, who made a late run from the rear, ended up finishing third just behind Roadhog who cleared him
by a neck.
Deal Making covered 1 1/16 miles in a quick 1 minute and 41.83 seconds.
In the year 2011, Graham Motion has run his older gelding in allowance races, 3 to be exact as he has failed his trainer in all of them by getting beat by small margins every time he got out running in them.
Out of three starts, Deal Making has finished 2nd once, 3rd once and once fourth without any wins. He has been running majorly over at a distance of 1 1/16 miles, but occasionally cut back to 1 1/8 miles.
