Deal delay: Miami Dolphins rookie QB Ryan Tannehill takes private offence lessons – NFL News
Miami Dolphins’ rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill has taken advantage of the deal delay to take some private offence lessons at the purpose-driven American football academy IMG Performance Institute in Bradenton.
Under the rookie deal rules of the professional league regulator National Football League (NFL), a rookie has to be under a contract to become eligible for participation in training camp.
This means Ryan will miss the camp as he was not signed until Friday and his deal negotiations are already facing delays over some differences on inclusion of offset language.
Ryan reportedly is not willing to accept the team’s planned move for seeking additional protection against the player.
The rule, which the league has introduced recently, has not been applied by any team so far. Even teams like the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Redskins who have drafted two top QB this year have not opted for the language inclusion
in their rookies’ deals.
Away from the controversy, Ryan has been taking time off the camp to train under the IMG Madden Football Academy’s director football operations and former NFL QB Chris Weinke. The academy is part of the institute. The facility has purpose-served
services, including coaches, trainers and equipment.
A section of media has quoted anonymous sources disclosing that the player tends to do the workout at the academy until his deal matter is resolved. He also has the playbook of the team with him.
Jeff Ireland – the Dolphins general manager – in the meantime has expressed disappointment over absence of the rookie, saying he will like to have all their players at the camp.
He said:
"It's disappointing when you don't have all your players in, regardless of who it is. You want to have all your players out there. Things are progressing and we're going to keep communicating until we get this thing done."
The rookie's absence has left the competition for the starting role between the incumbent Matt Moore and veteran David Garrard. The Dolphins who opened training camp on Friday gave starting snaps opportunity to Matt first, and Garrard
was due to have his turn on Saturday.
