Dean Hall wants standalone version of DayZ – Video Games Update
The Zombie mod for ArmA 2 is gaining more popularity as since yesterday the player count has exceeded half a million users. Dean Hall contemplates the challenges in developing a standalone version of DayZ.
The mod was released in April 2012 and since launch has been downloaded and played by over 600,000 unique players with more joining every day. Fans of the mod want a standalone complete product and people are speculating if Bohemia Interactive, the developers
behind ArmA 2, will assist Hall in releasing the full version of the game.
Dean Hall clarified at the Rezzed conference that Bohemia has been very helpful with the development of the mod and said, "They've been really good, even for mods when they're really small... the whole company, have hugely supported the development of the
mod and indeed have also supported me personally with advice and guidance." However, even so it seems that Hall is not really moving forward or has not announced anything regarding the start of the ArmA 2 standalone project.
It seems that Dean is not just limiting himself to just Bohemia for developing the mod as he stated that he has contacted other companies and talked to a lot of different people to discuss different ‘options’.
What Hall needs to be wary about is that if he doesn’t bring out the game quickly enough, someone else might beat him to the punch and steal DayZ’s thunder. The idea is already out there and it won’t be long before some other developer add the same game
mode to their already established Intellectual Property.
Gamers and fans mentioned Kickstarter to Hall who dismissed the idea because he believes that Kickstarter will not be able to raise enough capital to be able to license a game engine and cover the excessive development costs required for a ‘AAA’ title.
Hall however is optimistic and believes that he will have some positive news for DayZ fans by the end of the year but right now he’s busy with constantly updating and fixing the mod. Hall is currently working on Patch 1.61 which is likely to be released
soon.
