Dean Stoneman wins the Formula 2 championship
The British driver, Dean Stoneman had a dominating season this year, as he was able to seal the championship a race before the last race. Dean dominated throughout the season even though he did not have a very good start. The British was able to score a
second place at his home grand prix’s first race but failed to score in the second race at the Silverstone circuit.
His rival Jolyon Palmer took the lead earlier in the season, as he was able to win the first race and finish 2nd in the second race. However, Dean fought back and never looked back as he was able to score a 1-2 in the next race at the Marrakech
circuit in Morocco before finishing in 2nd and 4th places in the next two races at Monza in Italy. Stoneman was able to secure his second win at the first race at the Zolder circuit in Belgium before finishing in 3rd place
in the second race at the circuit. The Formula 2 went to Algarve in Portugal after that and the British driver was able to snatch another win after a disappointing pointless finish in the first race. Dean did not disappoint his home crowd this time as he won
the race at Brands Hatch in the first race before finishing a pointless second race at the track. The drivers proceeded to Brno circuit in Czech Republic for round 13 and 14. Stoneman was able to finish in 2nd place in both of the races to take
some vital championship points.
The Formula 2 champion was able to score an outstanding double win at Oschersleben in both races and now, lead the championship quite comfortable, as his rival was not able to score at the second race in Germany at the Oschersleben circuit. The drivers went
to Spain for the final 2 races at Valencia circuit. Dean scored 2 point while his rival Jolyon Palmer scored 6 points enabling Dean to secure the title a race before the season ended. Stoneman finished in a solid 3rd place to seal the season and
take the title comfortably before the end of the season.
All the British had to do was complete the race and make sure the Jolyon Palmer does not score more than six points, as that would take the battle to the last race of the season. Neither of the top drivers finished in the podium but since Palmer did not
score more than six points, which was enough for Stoneman to take the title keeping in mind he finished two places behind his rival.
"It was a bit of a heart wrench throughout the race as Jolyon was only two places in front of me and I knew he had to finish four places in front, so I just kept it nice and distant to stay out of trouble," Stoneman said.
The champion claims that the pressure did not bother him at all throughout the season and sometimes, a driver has to let his emotions and look forward to the coming day.
“I've got to say well done to Jolyon, as throughout the season we've had some fantastic races, and thank you to Jonathan Palmer for putting together such a brilliant championship for myself and the other competitors,”
he added.
Stoneman will also test drive with Williams as a part of the title prize.
“I just hope now that the F1 test will give me a chance to prove myself and allow me to go even further in motorsport,”
he said.
Italian Nicola de Marco’s win was almost forgotten after the groundbreaking news that Stoneman won the championship. The celebrations shadowed his win after starting on pole after being pressurised throughout the race by Will Brat. Nicola was delighted with
his performance and said that it was difficult for him as Will constantly challenged him throughout the race.
