Dean Treanor puts his mind on the Caribbean Series
If there’s one thing Dean Treanor has to worry about, it’s the Dominican Republic, Toros del Este. The former Triple A club Pitching Coach of Indianapolis is the current skipper for the South American club and is looking to push his side to a good standing
in the Caribbean Series. The Coach has been a long-time skipper in the minor leagues and that has been the story following his life as a ballplayer.
The concept of a baseball tournament like the Caribbean Series doesn’t relay much to Dean, as he’s not flaunted by the concept of sudden death in the competition. The Dominican Republic club skipper has been enjoying an entertaining life in Puerto Rico at
the moment. His Toros del Este side were impressively victorious against the Venezuelan Caribes in a recent match. The game was won by 6 runs to 5, with a tally of both clubs on 1 win and 1 defeat, each.
"It's been a great experience and everyone has really embraced me," Treanor said. "I don't know if I'm one-half Dominican or three-quarters Dominican, but I feel like it. I feel like I am part of the culture. They've actually opened their arms to me."
Treanor is 64 years old, and he’s been an American ball player for a long time. He was a member of the 1960s’ California Polytechnic State University Team. Drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1971, Treanor moved out of the minor leagues, 4 years later after
contracting a cuff injury on his pitching shoulder. It was in 1975 that Treanor went on a completely different run, as he joined the law enforcement, serving the department of San Luis Obispo, for 13 years.
"The police work was something that I developed a passion for, and I was trying to make a difference. But it's a hard, hard life," Treanor said. "I worked undercover for three years - and normally you only do it for two years, so I was in it a year too long.
I got a call asking if I wanted to get out of it, and it was the right time. I got back in - and here we are today."
After his stint with the police, he joined the minor leagues to manage teams across the country. Last season was no different for Treanor, as he played the role of pitching coach in Pittsburgh’s Triple A club in Indianapolis. In December, he was named the
Manager for the club.
