i want to know how would you prepare the environment for the children to learn a second language?

  4. Songs are indeed the best way: "Two Little Indians", "Three Crows","Old McDonald had a farm", etc. They are fun and easy to memorize. As children sing along, they practice sounds (vowels, consonants, intonation, rhythm, etc.).

    At the same time, you can use drawing and coloring. For example, get pictures of animals, describe them as far as color and size (big, small, huge, tiny, etc.) and ask students to draw (or to color them). Soon they will learn lots of words.

    Remember that since they are children, they are still learning their mother tongue as well. So, be prepared to deal with interference and language mix (both are part of the second language acquisition process).

  5. Speak only in the desired language.

In our classroom we label the room in the language we are teaching.  For example, we make labels of the chairs, doors, lights, windows, etc.  Then we have the children help put the labels on everything.  That way they feel apart of the language.  Then every week we pick a couple words besides the "room words" and use them in everyday conversations.  Be sure to slowly refer to the items that you labeled in the room in the other language.

  7. i worked for over eight years at a bilingual program and actually we made it into a trilingual program at times....most of the children came to the program already speaking spanish (actually half and half ) the remaining children spoke english...and as we were learning the other language(either spanish or english) I would add the sign languagel sign for words---friend, time, sing, .....and when we practice new words in the primary languages we also learned a new sign to go with them(it helped that one of my volunteers was a translator) but we would also add words in other languages too (german, japanese, korean, russian) trying to incorporate them into what we were already doing---that way they are always in context and children have concrete ideas of how people are the same but different.....children are very fast learners...and when you introduce things at the same time they dont even notice that theyre learning.....
