everytime i go to las vegas or out in the desert what does it mean when it says 2500 below sea level? or above sea level?

  1. It means that the land is not even with the sea.

Death Valley is 281 feet below sea level.  Very few places in the world are below sea level.  If Death Valley were a few hundred miles west, it would be buried underwater.  Places are measured "above sea level" to show their height, or elevation.  Mt. Everest is 29,029 feet above sea level.  The highest elevation on earth.
