Debate.........?

For school, I have to write a debate against restricting civil rights during war. The class was divided into groups and I was assigned to write the introduction and background.

Can you please read them and tell me what you think? (It's not as long as it looks and due tommorrow!)

Introduction:

Taking away peoples’ civil rights is just like giving the government a leash to chain the freedoms of the American people. Civil rights are the foundation of this Democratic nation. Our founding fathers created these rights for the good of the people. When in war, we tend to forget how important they are. The government tends to care more for the safety of its citizens rather than the freedoms that this country thrives on. Civil rights should be protected in both war and peacetime alike.

  1. the introduction was truly great. I loved it and I think it's the best it can be. Idk what else to say but it's amazingly good

  2. It's a good argument!  You might mention that the Japanese who were interred in WWII, most of them were hard-working people who ran farms, owned stores, etc., and most of them lost everything they had.  Also their sons joined the service and won lots of medals to show how loyal they were to America.

But more important, the purpose of fighting wars in the first place is supposed to be to defend our freedoms, but our govt. says we have to abandon our freedoms to save them!

And it's not just this war.  In the last 40 years we've had a 'War on Drugs' and a 'War on Crime' and both of these really had nothing to do with what they were supposed to be about.  They were both about giving police more power to search and seize, to hassle minorities and enforce the law selectively, and to make it harder for the accused to defend themselves.  Drugs were never as big of a problem before the War on Drugs as afterwards, but now police routinely bust down doors, arrest people, search them and their homes without 'probable cause', etc. etc.

  3. Looks good to me, great job.
