Im going to make a purchase for 280 dollars and i only have 230 in my checking account. I wanna make the purchase a credit instead of a debit. Will it reject my card? If i dont have the complete amount in my account, how much more can i credit to the account? Im with regions if that helps. And i know i will get overdraft charges and all that.

  1. If your credit/debit card is also a credit card (may or may not be) just tell them you want it done through credit when you go to pay for it.

If it goes through debit and you have less than the amount in your account it will probably go through as a debit but then you'll get dinged for an overdraft and be overdrawn. (banks like to make that overdraft fee, especially if you consistently pay it.)

I hate to say it, but you should probably wait until you have enough money to buy whatever it is.....  (but I'm sure you know that!)

  2. It will reject the card.  Debit cards with a credit card symbol only use the credit card network to authorize the transaction, it doesn't mean that your bank will forward you cash that isn't available in your account.
