  1. You should *first* contact the merchant.  A lot of times companies will experience system errors that will do things such as double-charging.  Sometimes they become aware of the problem right away and proactively fix it, and other times it's a very isolated problem and they need to be told about it.

If for any reason they're showing in their system that you were only charged once, they'll request that you fax/mail them a copy of your bank statement that shows the 2 charges.  From there, they'll credit you back the extra amount they charged you.

You shouldn't have any problem getting that money back.  If your order has already been shipped, you're likely to have a problem getting the original amount back too.  Actually, even if it HASN'T been shipped, they're going to try very hard for you to keep your order with them.

If they give you a lot of trouble, ask to speak to a Supervisor (don't take "no" for an answer) and kindly explain how them not cooperating with you now will mean much less business from your friends/family in the future.  This will usually do the trick.

  2. It may be possible that the bank has made the error.  Call the 1-800 number for your bank and tell them that only one transaction was made with this company and it was cancelled/returned so there should be a credit for the cancellation and for their error in debiting your account twice and put the ball in their court (so to speak)
