  1. No you can use it exactly the same as a credit card, except the money comes out of your checking account. If you're talking about the same kind of protection, then yes.

  2. You can use it as a "credit card" and make purchases online, however the money spent MUST be in your account or you will overdraft and be charged a ton of fees. Not fun.

A debit card is not like a credit card where you can spend money you don't have. If you want to do that, you'll have to apply for a credit card.

Also, if you're purchasing stuff from places like eBay, set up a paypal account... It's free and you can put your debit card on there and make purchases without anyone ever knowing your bank information. It's much more secure that way, and if anything does happen (like the person never sends your stuff) then paypal usually has protection for that and will refund your money.

  3. Yes, you can use it as a credit card to buy things on line, but is not recommendable, because since the funds come out directly from your bank account; if your card number gets stolen, your bank most likely won't refund any money that gets used from your bank account.

  4. You can use it like a credit card, but you can't spend more than you have in your account.

  5. A debit card with a Visa or MasterCard logo can be used in ATMs, many stores' card readers, and for many online purchases.  You can also use it for PayPal.

The main differences between a Visa debit card and a Visa credit card are: the debit card immediately deducts the payment from the funds you have available at the bank while you will need to make a payment to a credit card before the due date; and other than charges for using an ATM other than one at your bank, there are no interest or other fees for the debit card, while credit cards charge interest and an assortment of fees.
