Deborah Gonzalez stars as Argentina wins big against Colombia 66-45: FIBA Americas C’Ship for Women
Deborah Gonzalez added a game-high 14 points, dished out four assists and grabbed three rebounds as Argentina cruised past Colombia 66-45 on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at the FIBA Americas Women's Basketball Championship in Colombia. It was Argentina’s fourth consecutive victory and they now head to the semi-finals round to play against Canada.
The 21-year-old point guard shot 4 for 5 from the field, including 2 for 3 from three-point range and 4 for 5 from free throw line. Sthefany Thomas, from Clemson University in NCAA, also racked up 13 points and stole the ball three times. The Argentinean forward went 5 for 8 from the field, including 2 for 3 from downtown while power forward Carolina Sanchez scored 10 points and had two steals in the victory.
Erika Valek led Colombia with 12 points on 5 for 13 shooting from the field, including 4 for 8 from two-point range. Valek also pulled down four rebounds, dished out three assists and stole the ball twice. Elena Maria Diaz Lopez grabbed 10 rebounds and scored nine points while Mabel Martinez had eight points and six rebounds.
Argentina shot 34.8 percent (23 for 66) from the field and 71.4 percent (10 for 14) from free throw line. On the other hand, the Colombians hit only 27.6 percent (16 for 58) from the floor and 60 percent (12 for 20) from the line. Argentina also committed 13 turnovers, ten less than that committed by Columbia.
Colombia got off to a better start in the game and held an 11-9 lead with 03:57 to go in the first quarter. Argentina however picked up pace late in the frame and scored the last seven points of to carry a 16-11 lead into the second quarter.
The Argentineans successfully bridged their momentum in the second period and raced to a 25-15, early in the quarter. Martinez responded with three free throws on the next possession as the hosts cut their deficit to seven points, 25-18, with 05:21 remaining in the first half of the game. Argentina however bounced back with a 7-4 spurt, restoring their double-digit lead, 32-22, at halftime.
After facing some resistance in the first half, the Argentineans went berserk after the break. They outscored Colombia 20-8 in the third quarter and held a 22-point lead, 52-30, heading into the last quarter. Although the one way traffic stopped in the last 10 minutes, the Argentineans were never challenged.
