are collections agencies allowed to call you at work? How would they get my work number? I told them to not call my work number and they very rudely said oh we will continue to call and i said "not here you won't." If i lose my job because of a phone call, how will i pay the debt?

  1. Do not involveYOUR supervisor.  There is no reason to let him/her know what is going on in your personal finances.  What you do is contact the collection agency when your not at work, and can talk freely.  You ask for a supervisor and tell them that you do not want to be getting calls at work.  Inform them that you are noting the time, day, and taking their name.  Inform them that you will be sending a certified letter to their office requesting the same and if you recieve any more calls at work, you will be forced to get legal assistance. Then send a letter return reciept requested.

It will make them stop...trust me.

  2. They are not supposed to but that doesn't mean they won't.  I would call them back when you have the time and go over what they want.  Inform them that they cannot call your work.  I would contact a lawyer if need be if it continues.

  3. It is a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act for a debt collector to call you at your place of work after they have been told not to call you there.  If they persist, consider consulting with an attorney who handles consumer credit issues.  You can get a referral from your local county bar association or legal aid office.

  4. No! you can report them if they continue to harass you at work!

  5. You have to be up front with your supervisor or boss and have them inform the debt collector that they can no longer call their place of business during or after business hours in regards to the collection of a personal debt of one of their employees.  You may have provided the work number on the application you filed with this company.  If not, debt collection companies can file a "skip trace" to locate you by your social security number.  Either way they must stop and desist any further actions if notified by the owner of the company.
