  1. I hesitate to give certain information out over the phone but your bank people should be safe enough.  You should never be asked for your pin number over the phone but have a security word to access over the phone with your bank.  If you need a new pin number the bank will give you a temp one and then you go online and put in a different one immediately.    When you shop online be careful.  There are things like paypal where you set up an account with them and for free to you, they will pay the seller so that they never get your personal information.  That's how ebay works.  I do pay my utility bills, car payments, all monthly bills online and have never had a problem.  Be careful with unknown sites and be careful with sites that you contact through links in emails.  There are those sites that look so much like the real ones.  Just use common sense and listen to that little voice that tells you it might not be right.  The trick to a debit card is to write your purchases down in your check register just like you have written a check and then you know what your balance is.  Reconcile your bank account to your check book and make sure you've deducted and added everything you should and then you don't bounce anything.  It's worth the time and a good business practice to learn.  If you go to the bank, the bank will accomodate you in anyway you need be it with a check or your card.  Spend wisely and enjoy. . . .

  2. Judging from one answer, some people apparently do not realize that Yahoo Answers is international (regardless of URL used to get here).

I typically just use my debit card for groceries and cash (ATM).  Otherwise it might be too hard to keep track of to avoid overdrafts.

You have to be careful of some uses of a debit card because some merchants may put a hold on an undetermined amount of money until final charges are known (like hotel/motel, car rental, etc.).  A credit card gives you a bit more flexibility for initially unknown amounts like that, or leverage if you have to dispute something, as long as you pay promptly when due.

Online charges can sometimes be delayed until goods actually ship, and forgetting about those could mess with a debit card balance.  So I use a credit card for online purchases.

  3. yes it safe.

yes you ues it to pay for online shopping

    $250 and some times $500

    $20 bills .

  4. A debit card is as safe as the pin number that comes with it.

Nobody can use your debit card without the pin, but if  they have the pin then you are not covered for any damages or money they may take out of your account.

This can be an issue with phone banking if you give someone your pin number unsolicited. If your bank calls you and asks for your information, get their information, and call your bank back from a number you know is your bank.

You must keep your pin number protected, so don't do any online shopping from an unsafe computer (in a cafe, or on a public computer if you can help it).

The maximum amount of cash will depend on the kind of debit bank account you have, some accounts have limits of 100$ a day, some significantly more. Call your bank to find out.

ATMs usually give 20$, but if you use your debit card at a teller in a bank you can usually request your cash in whatever denominations you like.

At the end of July my website, www.btgnow.net, will have an article all about debit cards and savings/chequing accounts and how to use them.

    Good luck!
