Debutante Romania crash out of the 2011 Handball Championship – Handball Team

The Romanian women’s national handball team made their debut at the 2011 World Women’s Handball Championship. They were placed in Group C of the tournament. Their competing teams in the group were hosts Brazil, France, Japan, Tunisia and Cuba.
In their first match, the Romanian women handball players played against Tunisia on December 3, 2011. Romania won the match 30-29 and made a successful debut. Their second match of the competition was against Cuba on December 5,
2011. They defeated the Cubans 33-27 in an impressive win.

The Romanian women’s national handball team played their third match of the competition against Japan on December 6, 2011. The Romanian handball players were looking for a third straight win but the match ended in a draw. Both teams scored twenty-eight goals.
Romania’s fourth match in the group stages was against France which was played on December 9, 2011. Romania was looking for a win but the French women’s handball players won the match with an impressive win of 39-20.

Handball players from Romania played well in the group stages and entered into the knockout stages. The round of sixteen which features sixteen top teams also included the Romania as a hopeful team to enter the quarterfinals. In the group stages, Romania played
a total of five matches. They won two matches and lost two while one was drawn. They scored a total of 139 goals in their group stages and conceded 155 goals. Their goal difference was negative sixteen which was a major cause of concern.

This was also the reason why they could not finish in the top four position in their group. They did manage to enter the round of sixteen but the first timer Romania were unable to finish the knockout stage with a win. They faced Croatia on December 11, 2011.
It was a close match as Romania was about to win the match but Croatia managed to win the match by one goal. Romania lost the match 27-28.  The top scorers for Romania were Laura Adina Fiera and Valentina Ardean-Elisei. They did
perform well being the debutante team in the 2011 World Women’s Handball Championship but could not make their place in the quarterfinals or semi-finals.
