Decalcification spot?

hey,

the other day, i was eating some chocolate chip pancakes and felt some sensitivity on one of my teeth. i used a couple mirrors and saw that there was a small brown spot on that tooth. i thought it might be a cavity so i set up an appointment with my dentist.

after he examined he, he told me it is a decalcification spot and that it could turn into a cavity or just turn into a brown spot.

however, i've been googling decalcification spot and the results all describe it as white marks, oftentimes on the front surface of teeth.

can decalcification spots be brown and on the chewing surface of teeth, or should i get a second opinion?

  1. Decalcification is usually white and it can be anywhere on the tooth. It is usually on the facial side though. If he said enamel defect that would make more sense to me. I am not a dentist though. Usually if it is a cavity, they use a small pointy instrument called a probe and it will actually stick into the tooth. Decalcification spots are still hard and don't get a stick. I don't think a second opinion would hurt. Most times decalcification doesn't hurt either. Good luck and I hope that's all it is!

  2. it could be a decalcification spot that has stained.  However if you are having sensitivity, you may want to get a 2nd opinion.  Good luck

  3. If it is brown, it is more likely 'arrested caries', but  it can also be described as a decalcification because it is, but it has somewhat healed itself....

But like a decalcification is is a weaker spot, and more susceptible to decay.  Just different variety in terms for the same basic issue.

I suggest MI paste for these areas, if your dentist doesn't have it, try e-bay.

  4. Maybe you should get a second opinion, because as far as I know decalcification marks are white.
