Deccan Chargers and Pune Warriors play out a tense match – IPL 62nd match Summary
Yuvraj Singh, the Pune Warriors captain looked to build on his side’s recent improvement in performances as the Warriors took on the Deccan Chargers at the DR DY Patil Sports Academy, in Mumbai.
Yuvraj Singh and his Deccan Charger counterpart, Kumar Sangakkara, made their way on to the field for the toss to decide which side would bat or bowl in the first innings of the 62nd match of the Indian Premier League.
After winning the coin flip, Sangakkara opted to send the opposition in to bat, hoping to restrict them to a total they could easily chase in the second-half of the match. The decision proved to be a wise one.
Jesse Ryder and Manish Pandey gave the Warriors a stable start putting 31 runs on the board before Dale Steyn struck in the 4th over to dismiss Ryder for 18 runs. The wicket proved to be a catalyst as wickets fell regularly, almost one every two
overs if an average was to be taken.
Sourav Ganguly walked back to the pavilion after failing to get off the mark when Daniel Christian had him caught by Ojha and Robin Uthappa was caught and bowled by Mishra for four runs.
The flurry of wickets did not end there as Manhas found himself bowled by Mishra on a golden duck that only added to the woes of the Warriors, who were struggling at 45 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Yuvraj Singh and Callum Ferguson tried to get a partnership
going but the Deccan bowlers were on the top of their game as Jean Paul Duminy had Ferguson caught and bowled on 11 runs.
Mitchell Marsh scored a valiant 37 runs that took the score to 127 runs before nine more runs were added in the last four deliveries to end the innings with the Pune Warriors on 136 runs, for the loss of nine wickets.
The advantage was with the Chargers who took the slow and steady route to the target, but it almost ended up costing them. Sunny Sohal and Shikhar Dhawan combined for an impressive 67 run opening stand before being dismissed in quick succession in the 9th
and 10th overs, respectively.
It did not prove to be the game changing blitz that the Warriors were hoping for, as Sangakkara and Duminy kept the scoreboard ticking and when the pair was dismissed on 25 and 23 runs respectively, Christian and Chipli picked up the baton to continue the
chase.
It finished perhaps a too bit close for the Chargers’ liking, as the Warriors’ bowling staged a valiant comeback. With four deliveries to spare, the batsmen reached the 138 run mark and won the match for Deccan Chargers and with it, earned their side another
two points.
