Deccan Chargers franchise scrapped by BCCI – Cricket News Update
Bringing about the culmination to a prolonged issue which had been dragging on for roughly three months, the Board of Control for Cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 (BCCI) has taken the decision to terminate the Indian Premier League’s Deccan Chargers franchise, following
an emergency meeting of the league governing council in Chennai.
Issues arose after the owners of the franchise, Deccan Chronicles Holdings Limited (DCHL), became embroiled in financial problems, a revelation which came to light after the BCCI was approached by various banks which claimed the DCHL were under debt and
had mortgaged the Deccan Chargers team. In addition, the team owners had failed to play players their salaries for the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League which was concluded in May this year.
The BCCI set a September 15 deadline for the DCHL to pay their dues, including player salaries, but the company was unable to sort out the mess, and on September 6 the Deccan Chargers were officially put up for sale.
An auction was held for the sale of the team on September 13, but the team received a single bid - PVP Ventures offered up Rs 900 crore ($164 million). However, the bid was rejected by the DCHL, who considered it unsuitable.
The BCCI provided the franchise owners time (until September 15) to come up with a solution to the issue, but the company has clearly failed to do so, as a statement released by the board on Friday, September 14, 2012, said the Deccan Chronicle Holdings
Ltd had “admitted its inability to cure its breaches within the time stipulated in the BCCI notice despite every bit of assistance from the BCCI.
“Since the month of May, BCCI has received repeated assurances that the overdue player fees would be paid; all of these promises have been unfulfilled,” the statement continued.
“Considering the stated position of the Deccan franchise to refuse to rectify the various defaults including payments to players, foreign Boards etc, as also the deleterious effect such conduct would have on the reputation of the IPL and the franchise itself,
a decision was taken to forthwith terminate the Deccan Chargers franchise,” concluded the statement.
The board has confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that they will be issuing a tender for a new franchise on September 15, following a meeting of the BCCI’s marketing committee. Tasks to be completed at the meeting involve the drafting of a shortlist of cities,
from which the new bidders will be making a choice.
The new development closes the curtains on a team which featured world-class players including pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Darren-Scott-Lehmann-c52487 serving as head coach. The Chargers finished at the bottom during the first edition
of the IPL, but went on to be crowned tournament champions in 2009, under the leadership of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Gilchrist-c918.
However, the last three seasons have seen the team struggling to win matches. Whether the current line-up will be retained by the new owners, or whether the BCCI will put the players up for auction for other IPL franchises, remains to be seen.
