Deccan Chargers v Mumbai Indians – Indian Premier League 5 – Match recap – Sharma powers Mumbai to 5-wicket win
Rohit Sharma led the Mumbai Indians to a spectacular win against the Deccan Chargers as he hit a six off the last ball in the 9th IPL 5 match being played at Visakhapatnam on April 9.
The Deccan Chargers won the toss, and captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 Indians’ pacer Munaf Patel struck early in the innings, dismissing the former for 1, and followed that
up with Bharat Chipli’s (1) wicket in the 4th over.
Dhawan (41) managed to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SL-Malinga-c2540. The Chargers were now at a precarious 46 for 3, but found some respite with the innings of
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Daniel-Christian-c1308 (39). The 28-year-old Aussie established a 37-run partnership with Dhawan, followed that up with a 36-run stand with Sangakkara (14), and then joined forces with Cameron White (30) to contribute 41 runs to the total.
Following Sangakkara’s departure (clean bowled by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MM-Patel-c1987), Christian also fell prey to the deadly right-arm medium pacer, and was caught out at long-on, leaving his side at 123 for 5. White remained not out till the end of the 20 overs, but the tail-enders
were mediocre, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ankit-Sharma-c1053 (1) failing to make any substantial contributions. By the end of their innings, the Chargers found themselves at 138 at the expense of 9 wickets.
The Mumbai Indians’ bowling attack was spearheaded by Munaf Patel (who took an outstanding 4 for 20 in 4 overs), and Malinga (who claimed 3 for 27). Pollard, in addition to having nabbed some useful catches, also chipped in with a vital 2 for 33. Captain
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Harbhajan-Singh-c61453, despite having failed to claim any wickets, was effective in restricting the run flow, and conceded only 18 runs in 4 overs, with an economy rate of 4.50.
The Mumbai Indians’ innings got off to a faltering start, courtesy Steyn. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Richard-Levi-c2315, after having scored a 50 against the Chennai Super Kings, and
having followed that up with a dismal 0 against the Pune http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Warriors-c861, was not given a chance to improve on his performances, and sent back to the pavilion on 3.
Coming in at number 3, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ambati-Rayudu-c1007 (19), and then a 37-run partnership
with Pollard (24), which propelled their side to 95 for 4, after which the West Indian batsman was dismissed by Christian.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JEC-Franklin-c1684 (7) at the crease. With 5 runs needed off the last two deliveries, the match reached a fever
pitch, and Sharma did not disappoint, bringing the game to a spectacular finish by smashing the last delivery over long-on for 6.
Steyn’s bowling performance was perhaps the most remarkable of the match – he claimed 3 for a mere 12 in 4 overs, but his efforts, combined with those of Christian (4-0-49-1) and Mishra (4-0-31-1) were not enough to restrict the opponents, who claimed their
second win of the series, while the Chargers suffered their second consecutive loss.
Sharma was awarded the Player of the Match for his match winning 73, and the Mumbai Indians found themselves gaining 2 match points, occupying the 3rd spot on the tournament points table.
Harbhajan’s team will be playing their next match at home on April 11 against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rajasthan-c837 Royals, who will also be the Deccan Chargers’ next opponents, in a match scheduled for April 17 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
