  1. newer than 2000 and something with under 100,000 miles, you also are better off with a V6, they are a lot more dependable than 4bangers-- you get more power (safer getting on the freeway and will use less gas than the 4cylinder when you have to get on the gas) and they don't drink gas like V8s

also get something you see a lot of, that way you know you can find parts used, or new that don't cost an arm and a leg like the luxury brands

  2. Can't go wrong with a Honda or Toyota.. they run forever.

I'd stay away from anything American, except pickup trucks.  But there goes your gas millage.

  3. Try a Daimler-Chrysler "cloud car" (Chrysler Cirrus, Plymouth Breeze, and Dodge Stratus). I have a 1995 Cirrus LXi that I got for $700, then we put a little less than a grand into fixing it back up (it sat in a barn for more than 3 years). It's rated at 18 city and 29 highway. I have managed to get 23 city and 36 highway. Once we did all the routine maintenance it lost out on in those years of sitting, it ran great. It has been running almost perfect for a year and a half with over 150,000 miles on it. The cloud car series went from 1995-2000. The Cirrus LXi is really nice to. It has a 2.5L V6. Leather seats, power drivers seat, folding rear seat and a factory option 6 disc CD changer. My car has been driven hard too. It has been almost totaled twice, survived 2 deer and been a car for 3 students and is still going strong.

Just remember not to judge a car on it's reputation until you drive it to know for sure.

  4. You want to look at a 4 Cylinder car after 2000. Miles would be 70 K to 100 K for your budget. A Hyundai would be easy to get for that budget. Others in that category would be Chevys, Pontiac, Nissan, Kia, Mitsubishis & Volvos.

Honda & Toyotas will come with a very high Mileage for that budget. The replacement parts for these cars are fairly expensive.

Whatever you buy, make sure to show it to a dealer beforehand.
