Question:

Decent paying jobs for college freshmen?

I'm currently enrolled in college for this upcoming fall semester, and have recently moved. I've been on a ton of job search sites looking for things in the area, and have submitted dozens of applications, but have received no calls or mail for interviews. Perhaps I'm searching for the wrong things. I want something that pays more than minimum wage, and something where I can get full-time flexible hours to go along with my full-time(18cr/h) student schedule.

So what are some jobs for college kids, who of course, have little work experience, a high school diploma, and need to make more than minimum wage?

  1. This might sound bad, but I think a waiter at a nice restaurant is good. You get a paycheck plus tips. They can be somewhat flexible and give raises when you ask or show you're doing good.

  2. I've looked for something similar.  The sad fact is the most higher paying, full time jobs want you for regular 9-5 hours.  Many employers have a low patience for college kids with ever-changing schedules.  I interviewed at the place that just got rid of a worker because her schudle changed too much, and as a college kid I would be in the same position.  I didn't get called back.  I also wouldn't recommend working full time with and 18 credit load, at least just for your first semester until you learn what you can and can't handle study-wise.

If you haven't already, what you might want to consider is retail, which tends to work with a lot of students and be flexible.  It is close to minimum wage to start, but you can move up to customer service which would make more, or even work in loading and shipping, which may pay higher.  I know of a lot of people in college that do that (my boyfriend, for one).  You can also use it to build work experience, and then move over to something in your career field when you have more experience with school.  I had a friend that worked for Kohls for several years, and now works as a lab assistant for a hospital because she is getting a degree to be a lab tech.  The work experience will give you that extral edge, whatever it is to start off with.

Good luck, and remember to focus on your school work.  Hopefully something works out!
