Question:

Decent snowboard to learn and progress with.?

I recently started snowboarding and I want to buy a decent board to learn on and progress with.

I am a girl, tall (5'11) and around 65kgs (147lbs)

I am still working on my turns and would like a board that is a bit forgiving if I catch an edge but I also want to not have to buy a new board after one season.

I was looking at the Burton troop 154 but feel I might not be quite light enough to ride it. The guy at the shop suggested I try the Burton Clash 155 or Elite 155. Would these be good for me to learn with?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Yeah do not get the clash or elite cause those are guy boards which are heavier. the guy was probly trying to rip you off. Go with the troop, its a good board

  2. The sort of riding that you see yourself doing make a big difference in your choice of board.  I know a number of girl riders.  Here are some of the decks they use: Sapient Seduction, Ride Fever, Rome Vinyl, Burton GTwin, Burton Troop.  The Seduction is great at park and pipe as well as carrying speed on groomed runs.  The Troop has similar properties to the Seduction.  I also know someone who rides the Feelgood - they would not recommend it to anyone!  The Gtwin, Fever, and Vinyl have a bit softer flex.  Great for a new park rider.   These board might feel a bit less stable when you are going really fast.

The guy in the shop is likely steering you toward what he has in stock.  Why else would he be suggesting all men's boards.  Be careful of this.  The shop I go to is more like "Miracle on 34th St."  if they don't have it, then they tell you where you can get it.

Good luck picking your new deck!

  3. If you're a beginner, it doesn't matter at all what brand of snowboard you buy, as long as the height is somewhere between your chin and your nose, that's all. My first was an LTD board. I suggest a used board, so you don't have to pay so much on a board you're going to grow out of anyways.

  4. The guy at the shop is clueless or just trying to get rid of old stock. If i were you id go to another shop or if there isent one nearby  buy online instead just out of principle, as he shouldent be trying to sell you mens boards when you dont need one. Theres no way you are too heavy for a 154 Troop, it will be a good size board for you. Other good boards to check out are K2 Skyla, K2 Moment, Burton Feather, Nitro Mystique, Sapient Fluid, Salomon Lotus. All the boards ive listed are entry level boards so are easy to ride but progressive enough to last you a while, Good luck.

  5. I just bought the K2 moment this year, and I loved it...I felt like it was really forgiving and it really helped me to progress in one year.  The K2 luna and Skyla are also good boards.  They are all made really good and they are LIGHT. The moment was  289.00 which is really good for how great the board was.  The Luna is a little more than that, but if you get it now you can probably get it pretty cheap since it is the end of the season!  I am going to be using this board in the park next year even though it is not specifically for it. I can change the bindings around so it is more of a twin tip for the park rather than a set back stance for just cruising, and you can do that with a lot of boards.  I would go to a place and ask them what they think since they usually have people that know what they are talking about at most snowboard shops.  Getting any brand name board will probably insure that you have a good ride, but make sure you get good BOOTS! they are really important and you have to make sure they really fit (a little tight at first when you try them on)  You could be riding a $1000 dollar board with unfit boots and have the worst ride ever.  It's really about the whole package.  The bindings also need to be good, and I think bindings that come with a toe ramp and toe CAP esp. are helpful for begginers. (They make toe turns easier)  I like my bindings---the RIDE VXN--they are really nice so you might want to look into those.  They are convertable to caps or straps depending on what feels better for you.  Hope this helps!
