Deciding what to get on a tattoo?

Question

I've always been a bit optimistic about getting a tattoo, I don't know what I'd get, and of course I fear that I may regret it one day.

Anyways if I were to pick out a tattoo how do you go about deciding what to get and how did you come up with deciding yours (if you have one)?

i just recently got my first tattoo and i love it... i wouldnt just pick something because you think its "cool" do something that means something to you...  i came about my tattoo from thoughts and self evaluation... my family and i were struggling and my finace was my rock and i felt like everything was crumbling... this was shortly after i graduated high school and i felt so lost.. in march my fiance got his and i just really wanted one... and a name i had picked up in high school wass "dreamer" because i always told my friends to follow their dreams, i woudl draw alot and it kinda blossomed from their  i picked out my basic design i wanted the word and definitly stars i toold the idea to the artist i chose and we worked on it together and i love it This is mine

I haven't got a tattoo, but am getting one soon.

I made the choice to create my own design, then take it to the tattoo artist, that way the tattoo will be unique and only I have it.

Choosing a tattoo should be influenced by something you wish to remeber from this point in your life, or maybe something your doing.

I'm getting a dragonfly with a star. This tattoo is standing for my independence how i've changed this previous year.

A tattoo needs to be something close to the heart, not whats in style or popular.

Just think and it will come to you..

My first tattoo was on my back, angel wings, first I wanted it just because I liked it but then my grandpa passed away and I decided to do it in memory of him and because I liked the design. My second tattoo which I got on friday is a hibiscus flower and I got it done in Hawaii to remember my first trip there.
