Decimals to Fractions lol?

Hey people, my maths leaves somthing to be desired so I'm doing a bit of revision,, cuz I'm a good boy ;). I'm a bit stuck atm, please could you solve the following question- which isn't hard for somebody half decent at maths- and show how you worked it out, so I can learn myself. Thanks everybody!

Write as a fraction in its lowest term: 0.03333333333333

a decimal is over 10 or 100 or 1000 according to were it is.

so 0.4 is 4/10 which is 2/5

it looks like 1/30 to me

basically, you are are saying 1/x = 0.03333333

multiply both sides by x to get 1 = 0.03333333x

then divide by 0.03333 to get 1/0.0333333 = x

x = 30

so 1/x, which is what you are looking for, is 1/30

or to do it by other people's method correctly:

let r = 0.0333    one figure recurrs so we multiply by 10

10r = 0.333333

9r = 10r - 1r = 0.333333 - 0.033333

9r = 0.3

r = 0.3/9

if you simplify this it comes out as 1/30

this method always works, but remember to multiply by the correct power of 10, if 1 figure recurrs multiply by 10, if 2 recur multiply by 100, and so on

it will be 3/100

since 3 of 03 occupies the hundreths place

and the rule is we must SUBTRACT 1 from the denominator in repeating decimals only<others have other rules>

so it becomes 3/99 change into lowest term it becomes 1/11

if it is 0.3

three only occupies the tenth place..subtract 1 from it..it becomes 3/9 change to lowest term 1/3

depending on the place the nos. on the right occupies..

0.003=3/1000-1=3/999<change to lowest terms>
