One is called JNOV, which is the latin initials for Judgment Notwithstanding the Verdict, so if a jury trial verdict so offends the judge's sense of what they should have done as to be totally unfair in a civil case, he can render a judgment anyway.  That can go against either Plaintiff or Defendant.  

    I forget the term for the other, it's when a jury gives a damages award that the judge thinks is way too high, and the judge reduces the amount of the award.  The Plaintiff can appeal, but there's a risk that they will spend a lot of legal fees just to have the Appellate court agree with the trial judge, which is likely.
